Recognizing the need for more female voices in science, technology, engineering and math B4Networks, created this award with the intention of investing in a desirable future for young women and for STEM industries of all kinds. The Women in STEM bursary seeks to recognize a deserving female student in the Niagara region, that has shown an aptitude and interest in STEM, been a model student and will be entering a STEM-related post-secondary program in the fall.

This year, the first ever Women in STEM bursary went to Alexandra Girard, a recent high school graduate from Sir Winston Churchill High School. The B4Networks management team unanimously chose Girard based on an outstanding application that included strong academic performance and an inspiring determination to achieve her aspirations.

Amanda Lachapelle, Customer Service Manager from B4Networks was on hand at Girard’s graduation to present her with the $1000 bursary, congratulate her on her success and wish her well as she continues her academic journey. The bursary will help Girard as she begins her post-secondary education in an Honors Software Engineering program at the University of Waterloo.

“Our first winner had a fantastic application and she is so deserving of this award,” says Lachapelle. “Alexandra was the exact kind of student we had in mind when we created this bursary – we couldn’t have hand picked a better candidate.”

“Recognizing Alexandra’s achievements and investing in her future provided the ideal initiation of our bursary program.” Lachapelle continues. “We can’t wait to carry on this tradition supporting intelligent and ambitious Niagara women for many years to come.”
