There’s something impressive about how well families prepare for back-to-school season. Backpacks are ready. Schedules are adjusted. Supplies are purchased. Everyone knows where they need to be on the first day. It’s a good reminder that a little preparation at the right time can make everything that follows run more smoothly.
Businesses should think about September the same way.
At B4 Networks, we work with businesses across Niagara, Hamilton, Simcoe County and the GTHA, and September is a great time to review your technology before the final months of the year get busy. Before Q4 arrives, here are a few things worth putting on your business technology checklist.
Review Your Q4 Technology Priorities
If you asked three people on your leadership team about the company's biggest priority before year-end, would you get the same answer? September is a good time to make sure everyone is aligned. What projects need to be completed? Are you planning to hire or onboard employees? Are there operational changes coming? Will you be introducing new software or technology? And does your current IT environment support where the business is headed? Technology planning works best when it follows your business priorities, not the other way around.
Check Your Technology Budget Before Year-End
Technology expenses have a habit of appearing when you least want them. Before budgets tighten and calendars fill up, review what's coming. Are warranties expiring? Are software licence renewals approaching? Is aging hardware starting to affect performance? Are there cybersecurity, backup or infrastructure improvements that have been delayed? Planning for these expenses now can help you avoid unexpected costs and rushed technology decisions later in the year.
Make Sure Your Team Is Ready
A lot can change over the summer. Employees take holidays. New team members arrive. Responsibilities change. Temporary processes become permanent without anyone really noticing. Before Q4 gets busy, make sure everyone understands their responsibilities and has access to the systems they actually need. It is also a good opportunity to review whether former employees still have active accounts or whether existing employees have access they no longer require.
For businesses handling sensitive information, including long-term care homes and other organizations across Southern Ontario, regular access reviews can be an important part of reducing cybersecurity risk.
Clean Up the Technology Issues You've Been Ignoring
Every business has a list. Old user accounts that were never removed. Documentation that needs updating. Devices that should have been replaced months ago. Recurring IT problems everyone has learned to work around. Security improvements that keep getting pushed to next quarter. These issues may seem small individually, but over time they can create productivity problems, cybersecurity risks and unnecessary costs. September is a good opportunity to deal with them before Q4 makes everything feel more urgent.
Ask One Important Business Continuity Question
September is also a good time to think about preparedness. Ask your leadership team:
If an unexpected technology disruption happened tomorrow, would everyone know what to do?
What happens if your internet goes down? What if employees cannot access email? What if a critical server or application becomes unavailable? What if ransomware prevents your team from accessing important files? Your business continuity and disaster recovery plans should answer those questions before an actual disruption happens. If the answer is unclear, that is something worth addressing now.
Meet With Your IT Partner Before Q4
Your IT provider should understand more than your open support tickets. They should understand where your business is going. Before Q4, have a conversation about where your technology stands and what may need attention before year-end. That could include your upcoming technology needs, aging equipment, cybersecurity risks, backup and recovery plans, software licence renewals and your technology budget for the year ahead. A proactive IT partner should help you plan, not simply respond when something breaks.
Get Ready Before the Bell Rings
Families don't wait until the first morning of school to start buying supplies. Your business shouldn't wait until Q4 is in full swing to start addressing technology issues either. Whatever company you operate anywhere across Southern Ontario, September gives you an opportunity to review what's working, address what's not and make sure your technology is ready to support the months ahead.
